    PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE COURSE DESCRIPTION AS THIS COURSE HAS MANY REQUIREMENTS TO RECIEVE CERTIFICATION The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This program offers a choice of Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED courses to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience. Prerequisites Candidates MUST: Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course. Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Certification Requirements Candidates MUST: Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions. Actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during scenarios Demonstrate competency in all required skills Pass the final skills scenarios Successfully pass final written exams with a minimum grade of 80%. If a participant fails to reach the minimum 80% on the final written exam, a retest is allowed using the other version of the exam, provided that the participant has passed the practical assessment Blended Learning only: complete all eLearning modules. Certificate Issued and Validity Period The American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is valid for 2 years. IMPORTANT REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS This course is FREE to Albert Lea School District Students ONLY and is made possible through a federal grant that the district received. Informational sessions are MANDATORY. You and your student MUST attend in order to be eligible for the swim test, online course and in-person training. After attending an informational session you can enroll in one of the swim test slots available. Once you pass your swim test a link to an online course will be sent to you. You will need to successfully pass and complete the online course in order to be eligible to enroll in the in-person training classes. The online course takes roughly 7 hours to complete. It is required by the American Red Cross that you complete 19 hours and 45 minutes of in-person training. Failure to do so will result in not receiving your Lifeguarding Certification.     What is early childhood screening? Early Childhood Screening is a free and simple check of how your child is growing, developing, and learning. It is a review of your child's height, weight, hearing, vision, speech, language, motor, and cognitive development. Screening at 3 is preferred, but a child may be screened between the ages of 3 and the start of kindergarten, as required by Minnesota state law. Screening is not an examination to determine readiness for school but to screen for potential problems that may interfere with a child's ability to be successful. Early screening and intervention promotes early success. Information to note: If you need to cancel your appointment, please call 507-379-4838.. If you need to schedule a "re-screen" for vision, hearing, or development, please call 507-379-4838. For screening appointments, please allow 1 - 1 1/2 hours. InDesign allows you to create simple to complex multi-page documents such as brochures, flyers, books and magazines. Use Adobe Photoshop to effectively work with selection and editing tools, layers, and masks to edit, retouch and enhance existing images or create your own composite digital art work. Only those that are interested in setting up a private event on a date or a time that falls outside of the regular open hours of the boathouse or rock gym should complete this registration.   • High School Driver's Education

    Please plan ahead and register early, classes will fill fast! Driver's Education information is subject to change at ANY TIME. Prepare your future driver for the permit test, the State of Minnesota Graduated Driver’s License Test (GDL) and a lifetime of driving. Class fee includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Students MUST attend the 1st day of class or a waitlisted student will be allowed to take their seat. If your spot is filled due to your absence you will need to contact our office to move your registration to a future class. PARENTS MUST CREATE AN ACCOUNT FIRST AND THEN "CREATE A RELATIONSHIP AND ATTACH THEIR STUDENT TO THEIR ACCOUNT. Early bird registration fee of $335 ends 2 weeks prior to the start date of class. After that, the price increases to $360. Deadline to register for class is 1 week prior to the start date of class. Upon successful completion of the class, there may be an opportunity for students to take their permit test on the last day of class. In the event that is possible we will need your student's social security number. You will be asked to provide it upon registration. If your student is not eligible to take the permit test in class, they will need to make arrangements to take the written permit test on their own. Testing locations and information can be found on our website here. The instructor will communicate to students if in class testing will be an option. SUPPLIES NEEDED TO BRING TO CLASS EACH DAY: pen, pencil, and highlighter. **Students will have two (2) weeks, from the classroom completion date, to complete any outstanding course work. If course material is not completed within two (2) weeks, the student will not receive their blue card to test for their permit due to failure to complete the course in the allocated time. They would then need to contact the Community Education office to be re-enrolled in the next available class, and repeat the entire drivers education class. No refunds will be given.   • Junior Lifeguarding

    The American Red Cross introduces the revised Junior Lifeguarding program, which is designed to guide youth to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. The course focuses on building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills of future lifeguards. In this two-day workshop you will develop swimming skills and practice in-water rescues. Please bring your swim suit, towel, water bottle and pack a sack lunch for each day. NOTE: Class times are Thursday from 4:00-8:00pm and Friday 4:00-7:00pm Albert Lea Community Ed and the YMCA are partnering to offer this free class to Albert Lea School district students and is made possible through a federal grant.

    Kick-Off Band Lessons

    Students entering 6th grade and registered for band are invited to participate in kick-off lessons. During these 30-minute lessons, students will receive instruction on techniques specific to their instrument in small groups. They will learn how to hold the instrument, create sound and begin playing notes. Participating in these lessons allows students to begin the school year with confidence and progress much more quickly in class. Students must have their instrument choice approved by the middle school director to sign up. All students need an instrument that is in good working order and a Sound Innovations Book One for their instrument prior to the start of lessons. Music Mart in Mankato or Rochester is recommended for renting or purchasing instruments. Please contact the instructor with any questions. Time slots may switch due to instrument interest levels.     Students entering 6th grade and will be joining orchestra are highly encouraged to participate in kick-off lessons.
