About Early Childhood Screening

What is Early Childhood Screening?

Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how your child is learning and growing. It helps identify possible health or learning concerns so children can receive support before starting school.

What to expect at your child’s screening appointment:

A trained professional will check your child’s:

  • Vision and hearing
  • Height and weight
  • Immunization records
  • Large and small muscles
  • Thinking, language, and communication skills
  • Social and emotional development

Is there a cost?

No. Early Childhood Screening is FREE. All children are required to complete a screening before starting kindergarten in a Minnesota public school.

When should I schedule an appointment?

Screening at age 3 is recommended, but children may be screened anytime between age 3 and the start of kindergarten, as required by Minnesota state law. Earlier is better! The goal of screening is to ensure children are on track for school readiness and to provide support if additional time or experiences are needed.
