  • Gustavus Volleyball Camp

    For students entering into grades 5th-12th. Gustavus Volleyball coaches and players offer advanced position-specific and general skills training and competitive team drills and games to help athletes improve and take their game to the next level. The camp is structured much like their college practices. COACH BIOS Rachelle Sherden completed her 14th season as head coach of the Gustavus Adolphus College volleyball team in 2023. The Gusties concluded the season as MIAC regular season and playoff champions and secured another trip to the NCAA tournament where the team finished Top 32 in the country. In 14 seasons, Sherden guided the Gusties to 9 MIAC playoff berths and 7 NCAA tournaments berths, Sherden has received MIAC Coach of the Year honors four times in her career ('15, '18, '22, and '23) and AVCA Central Region Coach of the Year honors two times. Alyssa Taylor serves as associate head coach for the Gusties and has been on staff since 2018. In 2023 she helped the Gusties earn MIAC regular season and playoff championships and secure another trip tp the NCAA Tournament where the team finished Top 32 in the country. Taylor, a 2015 Gustavus graduate, returned to her alma mater after spending two years with the University of South Carolina Volleyball programs.   • High School Driver's Education

    Please plan ahead and register early, classes will fill fast! Driver's Education information is subject to change at ANY TIME. Prepare your future driver for the permit test, the State of Minnesota Graduated Driver’s License Test (GDL) and a lifetime of driving. Class fee includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Students MUST attend the 1st day of class or a waitlisted student will be allowed to take their seat. If your spot is filled due to your absence you will need to contact our office to move your registration to a future class. PARENTS MUST CREATE AN ACCOUNT FIRST AND THEN "CREATE A RELATIONSHIP AND ATTACH THEIR STUDENT TO THEIR ACCOUNT. Early bird registration fee of $335 ends 2 weeks prior to the start date of class. After that, the price increases to $360. Deadline to register for class is 1 week prior to the start date of class. Upon successful completion of the class, there may be an opportunity for students to take their permit test on the last day of class. In the event that is possible we will need your student's social security number. You will be asked to provide it upon registration. If your student is not eligible to take the permit test in class, they will need to make arrangements to take the written permit test on their own. Testing locations and information can be found on our website here. The instructor will communicate to students if in class testing will be an option. SUPPLIES NEEDED TO BRING TO CLASS EACH DAY: pen, pencil, and highlighter. **Students will have two (2) weeks, from the classroom completion date, to complete any outstanding course work. If course material is not completed within two (2) weeks, the student will not receive their blue card to test for their permit due to failure to complete the course in the allocated time. They would then need to contact the Community Education office to be re-enrolled in the next available class, and repeat the entire drivers education class. No refunds will be given.   • How to Play Pickleball

    Come learn the fabulous sport of pickleball. It looks a lot like tennis but covers a much smaller area. You will have an opportunity to learn the rules of the game along with some technique towards enjoying a wonderfully challenging method of physical activity. There is no need to bring a partner or provide a paddle or the ball unless you wish. You can also take breaks if you feel you are not yet ready for consistent play. We strongly encourage you to bring a water bottle, sunscreen and sunglasses, along with plenty of enthusiasm! If weather is a factor on any given class date, the instructor will be in touch with you via email or phone regarding postponements.

  • Interval Training & Walking Lanes

    Interval training or speed workouts on the track and turf at Jim Gustafson Field. For beginning runners, individuals training for a road race and former track athletes. Intervals will be from 10 seconds to 2 minutes in length. All abilities are welcome with a focus on personal improvement in running speed. Workouts will be designed with the needs of masters runners in mind. Injury prevention will be paramount. Two outside lanes will be available for walkers! NOTE: You do not need to stay the full 2 hours. Show up anytime between 6:30am and 8:00am.

  • Junior Lifeguarding

    The American Red Cross introduces the revised Junior Lifeguarding program, which is designed to guide youth to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. The course focuses on building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills of future lifeguards. In this two-day workshop you will develop swimming skills and practice in-water rescues. Please bring your swim suit, towel, water bottle and pack a sack lunch for each day. NOTE: Class times are Thursday from 4:00-8:00pm and Friday 4:00-7:00pm Albert Lea Community Ed and the YMCA are partnering to offer this free class to Albert Lea School district students and is made possible through a federal grant.

    Kick-Off Band Lessons

    Students entering 6th grade and registered for band are invited to participate in kick-off lessons. During these 30-minute lessons, students will receive instruction on techniques specific to their instrument in small groups. They will learn how to hold the instrument, create sound and begin playing notes. Participating in these lessons allows students to begin the school year with confidence and progress much more quickly in class. Students must have their instrument choice approved by the middle school director to sign up. All students need an instrument that is in good working order and a Sound Innovations Book One for their instrument prior to the start of lessons. Music Mart in Mankato or Rochester is recommended for renting or purchasing instruments. Please contact the instructor with any questions. Time slots may switch due to instrument interest levels. During these lessons, students will receive instruction on techniques specific to their instrument in small groups. Learn how to hold the instrument, create sound and begin playing notes. These lessons have helped students start the year with confidence and helped the class progress much more quickly. Just imagine, students will be able to begin the school year reading notes, rhythms and playing music! All students need an instrument that is in good working order and String Basics for their instrument prior to the start of lessons.   • Kings of the Courts - Boys Tennis Lessons

    Tennis lessons for boys entering into grades 4th-9th - JOIN ANYTIME! Each 50-minute lesson will be customized to the skill level of the boys participating. Throughout the sessions, players will enhance their skills in various aspects, including Singles and Doubles match play, serving, forehand/backhand techniques, volleys, overheads, and lobs. To encourage boys to experience tennis, Coach Chalmers will provide three 3-week sessions with 6 lessons total. Players have the option to sign up for multiple sessions either at the beginning or as they progress. Lessons will be held that the Albert Lea High School Tennis Courts and parents will be contacted by Coach Chalmers to arrange schedules. Players are required to bring their own racket.     Let's visit the MN Arboretum! Explore 1,200 acres of professionally maintained gardens, rare plant collections and accessible trails. In 2019 USA Today named the Arboretum the best botanical garden in North America. You will be on your own to explore and enjoy the Arboretum. There is a guided tram ride available if you choose to independently purchase a ticket for that upon arrival, the cost is $8.     This course is FREE to Albert Lea School district students and is made possible through a federal grant. Have some fun this summer learning to build your own model rocket! Whether you are a beginner or have some experience, there is a rocket class for you! These classes are for 2nd grade and older. Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert classes, the class price includes one reusable rocket and one engine. Expert class must supply their own challenging kit and engines. We will discuss model construction, safety and build a Viking rocket to launch on launch day. Class fee includes one reusable rocket and one engine. Intermediate Model Rocketry Build on the skills you learned in Basic Model Rocketry. Construct an Alpha rocket and launch it. Class fee includes one reusable rocket and one engine.
